Frequently Asked Questions about the UK Government Boiler Scrappage Scheme.
What about the Boiler Scrappage scheme?
The UK government announced that from 18th January 2010 they will be implementing the boiler scrappage scheme. This a scheme that gives households in England £400 off the cost of a purchasing and installing a new boiler.
Why is the government funding the boiler scrappage scheme?
According to the government it will help households cut their energy bills, reduce CO2 emissions and support thousands of jobs. Up to 125,000 households in England could benefit from the scheme. The government is spending £50 Million.
What are the benefits in upgrading my boiler?
New boilers have rated efficiencies of 90 per cent or more. This means that they use less fuel, resulting in lower CO2 emissions and running costs. So, for example, this means that by upgrading a G-rated boiler to an A-rated one, your heating bill should drop by about a quarter - a saving, on average, of around £235 a year.
Who is eligible for the Boiler Scrappage scheme?
People who own their homes or landlords who rent homes are eligible, but social landlords (like a housing association), housing associations and boiler installers are not. Apparantley, there are about 3.5 million homes in England with the least efficient types of boilers. Householders aged under 60 can only apply if the boiler is the main boiler used to heat the home and is in working order. For those aged over 60, the device does not have to work.
What type of boiler do I need to make a claim?
To qualify households need to have a working G-rated boiler. If it is more than 15 years old and gas fired - it is likely to be G-rated.
Which boilers and boiler manufacturers can the vouchers be redeemed against?
Vouchers can be redeemed against a boiler from any manufacturer for A-rated or equivalent gas, oil or LPG boilers, boilers with a Passive Flue Heat Recovery Device, Micro CHP units or Microgeneration Certification Scheme-registered biomass boilers and heat pumps. Solar Thermal is also eligible if combined with an eligible boiler replacement. Electric boilers are not eligible.
How do I go about making an application?
Check your boiler is G-rated - the age or a permanent pilot light tend to indicate if it is. Call us on 0207 437 0236 and we'll send an engineer to make an assessment for you. Alternatively, for a quick check to see if your boiler is eligible for the boiler scrappage scheme - Click here
